The french knot is a wonderfully versatile, decorative embroidery stitch. It involves making stitches in the form of small knotted dots, which can be used as a filler, pattern, or as the center of flowers.

Whipped running stitches are perfect for linear elements that are more decorative than stitches with single lines. The running stitch acts as a foundation for the whip stitch, so it seems somewhat raised with a twisted appearance that can be accentuated by using two different colors of thread.

The chain stitch is one of the basic embroidery stitches that is useful for making a continuous line that appears to be made with conjoined loops, like a chain. When you make multiple lines of chain stitches next to one another it also makes a good filler stitch–a stitch that can fill a larger area of a design rather than an outline.
